I wonder if the thread/cloth/whatever is the same as it was for Gran Gran because then it would be fragile

It sure has been through a lot, good and bad, and I think it looks really pretty on her, even if it's kinda old.

My guess is that some time or another, the cloth was replaced.

I guess the cloth would have had to be replaced...all the contact with the elements would sure put the the hurt on it if it were still an original.

My question is.. why did Gran Gran keep the necklace in the first place. It is symbolicly tied to her would-have-been-marriage with Pakku. Did she keep it around to honor her past? Or to mock it?

I think maybe she kept it as a souvenir of sorts...she up and left the north pole...all the way to the south. That's a pretty long ways from home. Maybe seeing the amulet not only reminded her of the life she could have had...but the life she already did.
