COMFORT
authors notes i dont own avatar or anything related to it
The war had ended, but it was at a great price. None felt it more than the two ladies that stood across from each other. The once enemies now looked towards each other for comfort. They shared the same loss.
It was during the final minutes of battle he passed. He was brave and strong and never once cried. He knew he had to face his father and destroy him. It was his duty, his destiny. And Zuko never back down from a fight.
It broke their hearts hearing the Prince did not survive. They took his death the hardest. After all, both Mai and Katara were in love with him. And there they stood, only inches away from each other, wishing Zuko was here. Even if it meant he was with the other.
Mai and Katara stayed behind after everyone left. They couldn’t bear to leave him just yet.
“I’m sorry.” Katara whispered, tears falling down her eyes.
“I’m sorry too.” Mai tried to smile, but there was no point. The one thing that made her smile was gone forever.
“Come on; let’s go inside where it’s dry. I’m tired of this rain.” Katara urged Mai. Mai followed her into her room.
“See? This is much better.” Katara smiled as she handed Mai her cup of tea.
“Yes. Thank you.” She sipped her tea. “I’m really sorry about before, when we were fighting.”
“It’s ok. I understand.”
Silence came over the two of them for just a moment. They were unsure of what to say or what to do. Katara decided to break the awkward silence as she sat next to Mai, placing her hand on top of hers.
“I’m sure everything will be alright.” She tried to smile, but she was feeling more like Mai than anything else.
“You don’t know that. What is going to happen to us? We can’t just spend our lifetime crying over someone who is gone.” Mai sighed.
“I’m sure you’ll find someone. I mean, look at you. You’re beautiful, smart, talented, not to mention you’re of high society. Any guy would be stupid not to fall for you.” A blush came over both girls as they let the words sink in.
“You think I’m beautiful?” Mai asked. How could Katara say such a thing? Was she really telling the truth?
“Of course. I always have. It’s easy to see why Zuko loved you so much.” Katara hung her head, afraid of what to think about herself. “But me, I’m not the same.”
“Don’t say that! You’re beautiful!” Mai began to stroke Katara’s hair. “Any guy would be a fool not to like you. I know I would.”
“You would?” Katara leaned closer to Mai. She should have jumped away or ignored the comment, but she couldn’t.
“Yes.” Her hands somehow found Katara’s necklace. There they stayed for a while. “This necklace is stunning. I never noticed it before. Was it from a guy?” There was a small hint of jealousy in her voice.
“No. It was my mother’s necklace.” Her head leaned in closer towards Mai. Mai didn’t object.
Before anything else was said or done, Sokka opened the door looking for them. “There you guys are. We’ve been-” He stopped once he saw how close Mai and Katara were. “What are you guys doing?”
“Nothing. We were just talking. That’s all.” Katara quickly stated before any more questions were asked. Sokka nodded his head before he left. “That was close.”
“Yes. Too close.” Mai whispered under her breath. Silently, she cursed Sokka for coming too soon.
